5 Tips for Student Athletes
It is perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed when you are a student athlete. Time management can certainly be an issue when you have to fit in workouts, practice, games, and of course school work. Stress is normal when you have so many responsibilities. Team spirit is important, but it can’t take up all of your time. If you are struggling to find a balance between everything on your plate, you might benefit from some of these time management tips we have provided for you.
1. Prioritize
You have made the decision that sports are important to you. That’s great, but you have to stay on top of your other commitments as well. Be sure to get your homework done in an organized and timely manner. You may want to spend time goofing off with friends, and that is understandable. It’s important to blow off steam, but make sure that you have everything in order before you do.
2. Make Some Sacrifices
As much as you may feel like one, you are not a superhero. You will need to cut some things out of your life. You should have fun, but when you are under the pressure of being a student athlete, you may have to make some sacrifices here and there. Small sacrifices can add up to a good amount of time. Skipping the movie your friends want you to go see in order to study is probably a good idea.
3. Stay Focused
Do your best to eliminate any distractions in your life. If you have a friend that steals your focus while in class, you might want to ask to move your desk. Your focus needs to be on point when you are juggling classwork and sports. If your friends are a distraction to you, don’t be afraid to stand up for what you need. You don’t want to sacrifice your relationships, but you shouldn’t put fun in front of entertainment. Your time is valuable, so be sure to use it wisely.
4. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
While you definitely need to eliminate or at least limit distractions, you should also be open to people who want to help you out. It’s always helpful to be surrounded by like-minded peers who share the same goals. Plan study groups with your teammates, as well as workout time with them. Remember, your teammates are in the same position as you. Together, you are able to provide and receive a helping hand and organization with school and athletics.
5. Reflect and Evaluate
Life as a student athlete can be rough. Every now and then, you should take a moment to reflect. Make sure that what you are doing is what you want. Your happiness is the most important thing, so if you are too overwhelmed and miserable it’s okay to make some changes. Your priorities are yours to set, so don’t be afraid to take it all in your own hands.
